Sin and forgiveness through Atheist eyes

9 Sep

Growing up in the protestant faith, my concept of sin was that it was to do anything god forbade. What that might be was either what it said in the bible not to do, or what the pastor (who supposedly spoke for god) said not to do. A sin was a transgression against god.

It was at the same time that I learned about the concept of forgiveness. (Mind you I was still very young) I was told that the idea of forgiveness was an exclusively christian notion, that other cultures and people did not have this idea of forgiveness. I can remember the person using Japan as an example for some reason.

The interesting thing about sin is that some people define it differently. For me it was usually  just going against the 10 commandments.  For a few fringe groups, dancing is a sin. (The bible goes both ways on this) The administration at “Liberty” “University” thinks dancing, watching “R” rated movies, and video games are sins.

According to Leviticus 19:27 round haircuts are a sin. Leviticus 11:8 also says football is a sin. Pulling out during sex is a sin. Tattoos, Shellfish, dressing nicely as a woman, and having crushed testicles are also right out according to the bible.

So what about me as an Atheist? What do I think about sin? Does sin exist?

Well since there is no god to transgress against, there can be no sin. This does not mean that there is no such thing as “wrong” in an Atheist’s eyes. I still think that killing, stealing, rape, etc. are wrong. I don’t need a god to tell me that. I don’t, however, think drinking, dancing, sex, games, movies, and shellfish are wrong.

As for forgiveness. I’ve come to realize that this is not an exclusively christian concept. I’m not christian and I still believe in forgiveness. To me, forgiveness is as much about your own healing process as it is about the person who wronged you. You also show higher moral fiber (in my opinion) if you forgive a person instead of holding a grudge.

You need one of those thumbs-up/star-rating thingies on your blog, so I can say something when I don’t have anything to say. Totally agree with this post – the problem with ‘sin’, which is at the heart of the Christian/religious message is like you said, it’s definition. In order to convince someone they need a god, you have to convince them they are inherently ‘sinful’, which is a religious term in itself. I find it misleading, and strange.

Truly all about sin is not really gotten both from humanity and individual perpestives that the world came to be in an arena of religious fanaticism which is the problem of the world. I may say that sin is not in existence nor has it been before now. Sin to me is an ordinary phenomenon in man which i may also say it came to be when man is lazy about his life in philosophical speculatives. We sin not against god nor man but sin is something like sane meaning one sins because of the inborn sane or he find himself insane and that to him is sin. When we stop worshipping ourselves taking to be to god then, this subject sin will never be heard. Sin is individualistic, if i have not rational reasoning in me and i don’t know how to be kind to humanity is sin as many christian theologians may sy. The 21st century church is in a great trouble in the sense that the study of theology in the church is no longer encouraged thereby destroying the woorks of the early church fathers for the church of today is nothing but a heap of disappointment to humanity. the major problems fo the society today is caused by the christian church with their irreligious practices. no wonder the famous radical theologian Bonhoeffer Dietrich of the great German kingdom stated it the christianity of his time which i may also say is still to date is religionless. what the christians are practicising today is nothing but wealthianity and dehumanity. the society is been polluted by the wrong practices of the church, behaving differently from what they preach. the introduction of the practice of indulgence, papacy, sexual immorality seen among them, blasphemy of the natural ethical codes of conduct, the creation of motherless baby`s home but having mothers in their conventions and the false practices of monasticism, abortion of innocent chilldren, the enforcement of the end of procreation done by the church, thereby calling their god unwise god because if he is wise and knows that procreation is bad to humanity he would not have started already. the church has betrayed her god, imagine killing whom they said is their savior and how can a death man be a savior to the livning. Jesus died not to save anything one as the christian theologians will claim it but, he died as normal because he disobeyed nature`s law or rules. let no one deceive you with fake abd falsified religion saying if only you beleif on mortal but death and forgotten man you shall be save, let me tell you you have your life within you. be youself and stop talking about someone whom you don`t see to belief. THINK and THINK,.

Forgiveness actually begins with one’:s self. Before one can forgive, he has to forgive himself first.

Those verses are sins for Jesus’s people the Jews not for Christians Jews are part of Judaism which is a entirely different religion of it’s own.
P.S. : Sex before marriage is a sin.

Adam knew Eve without proper marriage and gave birth to fathers of the world. So why sex before marriage sin? Sin as earlier stated is man’s limitations to himself and his weakness. You only sin against yourself because what your conscience works against you is sin.
